What are some of the Cons of Data Collection:
Privacy Risks
- Personal info can be exposed or misused
- Companies and government may track online activity
- Lack of how consent and unawareness of how data is collected and shared without permission
Bias & Discrimination
- Historical Bias: Datasets reflect past inequalities. AI models trained on past inequalities may continue these injustices such as racial or gender disparities in hiring decisions
- Sampling Bias: Data collected from a limited group that dosent represent broader population which leads to inaccurate predictions or decisions
- Exclusionary practices: Some communities may be under represented in data collection
- Algorithmetic Bias: Machine learning models may unintentionally favor one group over another if the training data has imbalances or reflects human prejudices
Lack of Transparency
- Lack of information surrounding how and why data is collected, used or shared. Why and by whom, is, collecting data, is always a mystery.
- Limited awareness: Most users dont fully understand what information about them is being gathered
- Hidden data sharing: Organizations may share or sell user data to third parties without clear disclosure, leading to unexpected uses of personal information
- Difficulty in consent: Privacy, policies and terms of service are often complex, making it challenging to determine what users are actually agreeing to
- Lack of control: Without clear access to or knowledge about data usage, individuals may struggle to protect or manage their own digital footprint
Manipulation & Exploitation
- Collected data can be used to influence consumer behavior, political views or societal trends in ways that benefit corporations or governments more than individuals
