ICEYE-X36 is a commercial Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite built and operated by the Finnish microsatellite company ICEYE, following its launch in March 2024 via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. As a low-Earth-orbit radar imaging platform, it utilizes active microwave pulses to bounce radar waves off the Earth’s surface and measure the return. This enables the satellite to capture high-resolution imagery through thick cloud cover, smoke, darkness, and severe weather—surpassing the limitations of conventional optical satellites that rely on sunlight and clear skies. The satellite’s advanced capabilities provide critical tactical reconnaissance for tracking ground infrastructure and surface changes. Notably, ICEYE maintains commercial agreements to supply vital radar intelligence supporting Ukraine’s armed forces. | The Progress Archive | October 19, 2026
