Outside looking in, having significant influence over the oil sectors of Iran and Venezuela could provide geopolitical and economic advantages because both countries possess some of the largest proven oil reserves in the world. Such influence could give the United States greater leverage in global energy markets, help shape where and how those oil supplies reach international buyers, and reduce the ability of rival powers to benefit from discounted oil exports from those countries. It could also strengthen the effectiveness of sanctions and provide additional energy security options for U.S. allies. The primary benefit would not be ownership of the oil itself, but increased influence over global energy flows and the strategic advantages that come with it.
Similarly, control over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, would provide significant strategic leverage because a substantial amount of oil exported from Gulf producers passes through it. Control of the strait could help ensure shipping lanes remain open during conflicts, protect allied energy exports, provide military and diplomatic advantages in the region, and give the controlling power considerable influence over a major artery of the global energy trade. In this scenario, the real advantage would not be direct control of all the oil moving through the region, but influence over one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints and the global economic leverage that comes with it. | GreatCircleYT | October 2, 2026
